NEW LINE OF HIGH-SOLIDS, LOW-SHRINKAGE FLUOROELASTOMER CAULKS/SEALANTS OVERCOMES SHORTCOMINGS OF EXISTING HI-SOLID MATERIALS

January 2003 - Pelseal Technologies, LLC has been awarded a patent on its new high-solids fluoroelastomer sealants and caulk technology, specially formulated to reduce shrinkage and improve the ease and speed of application.

The first new products in the line are PelsealŪ 3159, a self-leveling two-part product ideal for horizontal applications, and PelsealŪ 3169, a two-part product suitable for vertical or overhead applications. (An additive in the 3169 product keeps it from flowing.) Both products (gray in color) contain over 80% solids, the highest solids content on the market today.

With a solids content of 80% or better, PelsealŪ 3159 and PelsealŪ 3169 produce far less shrinkage than traditional two-part fluoroelastomer caulks and sealants with 60-75% solids. These new products require fewer applications - translating into major savings in labor and money at the job site. To illustrate: typical 70%-solids sealants shrink to 54% of their original volume after application, while an 85%-solids sealant will maintain 74% of its original volume. As a result, the higher solids product will be able to fill in one pass what the lower solids product needs two passes to accomplish.

Further, even with the higher solids content, the new products remain easy to mix and can be applied readily with a trowel or caulk gun. In fact, at 83% solids, the 3159 product is even easier to store, pour and put in place than 70%-solids products currently on the market.

Like all fluoroelastomer products manufactured by Pelseal, the new products exhibit extraordinary performance characteristics in harsh service environments. They are capable of withstanding temperature extremes of -40° to +400° F and are resistant to attack by the most aggressive chemicals and corrosive liquids (including concentrated nitric, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, to name a few).

An important by-product of the new formulation is its environmental friendliness. Not only do they utilize less solvent - averaging less than 20% by weight - but the solvents employed are also VOC compliant with VOCs under two pounds per gallon.

Also launched in this line of higher-solids liquid fluoroelastomer products are PelsealŪ 6080 and 7040. PelsealŪ 6080 is a super high-flexibility/high-solids caulk/sealant/adhesives/coatings exhibiting the same properties as PelsealŪ 3159-3169. PelsealŪ 7040 matches the other three products in performance and is the one-part caulk/sealant of the line.
